Silhouette Cameo in the Classroom

As many of you may know, one of my favorite things to use when creating classroom labels, interactive bulletin boards, or classroom crafts is my Silhouette Cameo! If you haven’t heard of one of these machines, then you need to check it out! It is user-friendly, and the possibilities are endless! Today I am excited to give away a Silhouette Cameo to one of my amazing bloggy friends!

Silhouette Cameo in the Classroom

I bought a Silhouette Cameo after observing several of my teacher friends using the machine in their classrooms. This machine is a must-have item for any educator or crafter! As a teacher, I use my Silhouette Cameo all the time! It is a great machine to use to help decorate your classroom, create a student craft, or to cut those tedious popcorn words that you previously cut by hand!

My all-time favorite feature of the Silhouette Cameo is the ability to cut out printed objects. Simply create your image on PowerPoint, upload the image onto Silhouette’s software, print the image with Silhouette’s registration print marks, and you’re all set to go! It will easily cut out your image! Before owning my Silhouette Cameo, I would spend hours just cutting out our Kindergarten popcorn words (sight words). This machine saves me so much time and energy!

It’s Dr. Boender here! Last year I turned my room into an operating room, and my students became doctors. We weren’t just any doctors, we were contraction doctors. However, before my students could complete contraction surgery, they needed to look the part first! I created these stickers using my Silhouette Cameo. My students thoroughly enjoyed being surgeons and looking the part too!

My students loved these personalizable doctor badges! Each student had safety glasses, a doctor badge, a surgical cap, and a surgical mask. It is amazing how engaged students can be when the setting/environment of the classroom changes slightly!

I recently used my Silhouette Cameo to cut out my Male Kindergarten Teacher button from vinyl! Originally, I used to compare other vinyl machines until I found out I could use this machine to cut vinyl. Pretty nifty. I am so excited to use this decal to personalize my notebooks, mugs, storage bins, and much more!

This past Halloween I took part in a Halloween Popcorn Box Party By Laura Kelly! To create these popcorn boxes, I purchased a number of designs from Silhouette’s Design Store. Their design stores has thousands of inexpensive designs that are absolutely amazing! Simply search what you’re looking for, choose your design, checkout, upload your purchased design into the Silhouette software, and cut – It’s really that easy! Check out my blog post here!

Creating an Organized Environment with Seat Sack!

Say goodbye to student mailboxes and hello to convenient, personal, and out-of-the-way storage from The Original Seat Sack Company®. How many of you use student mailboxes to collect or store student papers? How much time is being used to have your students put their papers in their mailboxes after each transition? A lot, I bet! I was so excited when I found O2Teach® products from The Original Seat Sack Company®! Seat Sack chair pockets, the Read-n-Go book bag, the Hand-e-Sack, and Pencil Pouches are sure to cut down your transitions and effectively store all of your student’s’ belongings!

Storing personal belongings and school supplies is that much easier with a Seat Sack Chair Pocket. These chair pockets are high quality, durable chair pockets with multiple compartments. This makes storing school supplies, completed work, and leveled readers a breeze! Instead of having your students put away their papers in a mailbox, why not have them easily put it in their Seat Sack Chair Pocket? These chair pockets make my transitions from activity to activity a breeze!

We all know how stressful storing crayons and pencils can be! Check out these pencil pouches from Seat Sack! They are great for storing those sharpened pencils and crayons. Plus they fit conveniently in the back of your Seat Sack Chair Pocket! Also each pencil pouch comes with a personalizable card. These pencil pouches are great for storing scissors and glue sticks too!

As part of positive reinforcement, my students each receive a ten frame sticker book. My students receive a sticker when I see them going above and beyond by following our classroom rules, being a good friend, or helping another classmate. When my students receive a full ten frame, they get to pick a prize from my classroom treasure chest! I’ve had the worst time coming up with something to store these sticker books in. They’re too big to store on their tables, and they fall onto the floor from the Command Hooks that I have placed under each table. The Original Seat Sack Company’s Hand-e-Sack is a great alternative to storing these sticker books.

This organizer is great for any type of school supply, too. It’s perfect for pencils, pens, glue sticks, crayons, flash cards, calculators or any small items that may get lost inside of a desk or roll off the top of a table. Simply stick on its dual locking system developed by 3M products, and you’re good to go. Students can easily remove the organizer if needed.

This Read-n-Go Book Bag from the Seat Sack Plus Product Line is perfect for taking home leveled readers or library books. The sturdy bag is perfect for my take-home book bins. Each child in my classroom takes home a Read-n-Go Book Bag, a leveled reader, and a recording card. When the child can read the book independently, parents must place their initials next to the title of the book. The child then reads the book to my aide. If the child can read it independently without any help, he/she will receive another book. This process continues until the end of the year and the level of each book bin increases as the children finish each book bin.

The one thing I love about all of the products from the Seat Sack Product Line is that they’re easy to clean! As a teacher I know how important this can be! These products are high quality, durable, and guaranteed to last many years.

The Original Seat Sack Company would love to give one of my readers the chance to win The Ultimate Organizer Pack
The Ultimate Organizer Pack contains:
  • 25- Seat Sack Plus
  • 25- Pencil Pouches
  • 25- Read-n-Go Book Bags
  • 25- Hand-e-Sack Stick & Stores
It’s time to get rid of those student mailboxes and upgrade to the ultimate organizer pack! This set is sure to create an organized classroom environment for many years! Good luck!
Happy Organizing,

Udderly Smooth in the Classroom

What’s the number one problem teachers face on a day-to-day basis? Dry hands, of course! Well, I have the best solution!
Udderly Smooth Udder Cream, of course! If you haven’t tried this stuff, where have you been? It’s amazing! How many times a day do you wash your hands? Let’s see…
1. Check binders
2. Tying a shoe
3. A child coughs or sneezes on you
4. A child wipes their snot on you
4. Touching something wet… and you’re unsure of what it is (How many of your can relate?)
I could go on forever! I bet I wash my hands at least ten times a day. Now you may be wondering – What’s the big deal? Isn’t it a good thing you wash your hands all the time? Yes, you’re right, it is. However, washing your hands so much throughout the day can often cause dry or cracked hands. However, good thing I have Udderly Smooth! It’s definitely a necessity in any Kindergarten classroom. The best part is that it’s not greasy at all! As a male, I do not like products that have a strong fragrance. It contains rich moisturizing ingredients that can be used on dry skin, cracked skin, foot care, a facial moisturizer, and many other uses. Plus Udderly Smooth makes great gifts too! It may even bring out your inner artist. You’ll be drawing cows for days!

Create & Decorate: Halloween Craft Project for Kids!

It’s pumpkin season and you know what that means: jack-o’-lanterns! One of my favorite childhood memories is carving pumpkins into a spooky, funny, or adorable jack-o’-lantern. Creativity in the classroom is very important to me. I try to make each lesson and craft as engaging as possible and allow my students to create their own masterpieces. I am excited to share with you an adorable pumpkin craft that is sure to get your students excited about Halloween and allow them to create their own works of art – minus the ooey gooey mess! I am also excited to share how you can use this adorable pumpkin die to create a fun teacher gift.

How cool is this scarecrow pumpkin? This is a great craft if you’re not able to celebrate Halloween at your school! Click here to find out how to make it!

Happy Halloween,

Halloween Popcorn Box Classroom Party

Trick-or-Treat! Halloween is right around the corner and you know what that means – Halloween decorations, tasty treats, and creepy costumes! As Halloween approaches you know I’m getting ready to decorate my classroom and make it that much more special for my students!

Last month, an amazing friend of mine, Laura Kelly, sent us a package full of crafting supplies. I used some of those supplies along with my Silhouette Cameo to create some fun, festive, and spooky Halloween popcorn containers to hold some of my favorite Halloween tasty treats!

Before decorating my popcorn boxes, I painted each box with all purpose acrylic black craft paint. I painted each popcorn box with two coats of paint and allowed them to dry between each coat. The original popcorn box lines are not noticeable either!

I purchased a number of designs from Silhouette’s Design Store. Their design stores has thousands of inexpensive designs that are absolutely amazing! Simply search what you’re looking for, choose your design, checkout, upload your purchased design into the Silhouette software, and cut – It’s really that easy! If you haven’t purchased a Silhouette machine, be sure to check them out on Silhouette’s website or on Amazon. They are a must have for any teacher – the possibilities are endless!

Check out all this craft supplies that Laura Kelly sent us from World Market, Lollipics, Laura Kelly Designs, Kunin Group (Felt), Scotch Brand, Adorn It, Udderly Smooth, and I Love to Create (Aleene’s Brand).

Check out these amazing candle holders that I picked up from WalMart. How much more Halloween can you get with some witch spiders? Moving on… Now let’s move on to the most important part… the tasty treats!

Treat Yourself With Some Tasty Treats!

What is the one thing that everyone (even adults) look forward to about Halloween? The candy and tasty treats of course! I filled my popcorn buckets with some of my favorite treats: candy corn, popcorn, and Halloween candy bark! I’m definitely most excited about the Halloween candy bark that I found from Just A Taste Blog. Here’s what you will need to make this delicious treat:

  • Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups – minis
  • Kit-Kats – minis
  • Brach’s Candy Corn – 3 lb. bag
  • Bag of M&M Minis
  • Ghiradelli Bittersweet Chocolate Chips (2 bags)
  • Wilton Candy Eyeballs

My absolutely favorite part of this treat is adding the Wilton Candy Eyeballs. However, they were very difficult to find at my local supermarket. I resorted to finding them on Amazon. You can find them here: Wilton Candy Eyeballs

  1. Melt 3 cups of Ghiradelli Bittersweet Chocolate Chips in the microwave or double boiler. If you’re like me and cooking scares you – use the microwave!
  2. Place parchment paper down on a cookie sheet and pour melted chocolate mixture onto parchment paper.
  3. Immediately add desired candy onto the melted mixture.
  4. Place cookie sheet in refrigerator for about an hour.
  5. Take hardened candy bark out of the fridge and cut your bark into small pieces.
  6. Enjoy!
Ta Da! Are you drooling yet? Using my Silhouette and the popcorn boxes from World Market made this project simple, fun, and perfect for any Halloween party. This would also make a great teacher gift too!
If you’re dying for another tasty treat, check out these lollipops from! Right now you can get these personalized treats for only $1 each using the promo code HALLOWEEN2015.

BOB Books: Reading Magic Sight Words App!

What iPad apps are the best to use in the classroom? Is this a question you’ve ever asked? I am constantly asked this question from parents and colleagues. The new BOB Books: Reading Magic Sight Words App is one of my new favorites! Many of you are familiar with the amazing BOB Books box sets. Bob Books, America’s #1 learn to read program, is proud to present Bob Books Reading Magic – Sight Words, the newest addition to their popular series of apps for 3-5 year olds. This is a must have app in any kindergarten or 1st grade classroom!

The app has a very simple, easy-to-use home screen that students are easily able to navigate independently. The background music is also very catchy – I know my students especially like it! Students simply press the “play” button to begin!

From the multiple stories that students can choose from, there are four different levels. The levels are as follows:

  • Level 1: Students match letter tiles to the correct letters. When the students place the correct letter tiles on each letter, the voiceover spells out the sight word.
  • Level 2: Students trace each letter with their finger on the iPad or iPhone. This is a great way to practice forming each letter.
  • Level 3: Students spin the spinner until the correct letter is shown in each position. This level is more difficult, but it is great for challenging our students.
  • Level 4: Students need to identify the correct sight word from a variety of words shown on the screen.

Since it is the beginning of the school year, my students are currently working on levels 1 and 2. However, as we learn more sight words, I will allow my students to move to levels 3 and 4.
There are a variety of stories that your students can choose from. With 10 stories focusing on 30 common Kindergarten sight words, this app is everything I’ve been looking for. This app provides students with authentic hand-drawn illustrations and full-color animations that make it fun and engaging for all types of learners.
Students press each word to have the voiceover reader read the words to them. When they press the Kindergarten sight word, the students must complete each task depending on the selected level.
As students press each letter tile, the voiceover reader identifies each letter. Students must drag the letter on the correct letter. When the students have completed the sight word, the voiceover reader reads the whole sentence and the picture comes to life!
Spelling each sight word completes the story. This app is sure to keep your child or students engaged and excited about learning!

Level 2 reinforces the printing of each letter. This is perfect for my class right now as we are learning how to print each letter in our ABC Bootcamp!

Bob Books has a variety of apps and box sets that are perfect for any level of reader. Be sure to check out all their Box sets too! Also, don’t forget to check out this Bob Books App Bundle that is perfect for any classroom!
Bob Books is a great way to reinforce learning at home with a fun twist! Bob Books would like to hook up two of my bloggy friends with a FREE BOB Books: Reading Magic Sight Words App! Just enter the rafflecopter below for your chance to win! Remember – the more entries you have, the better your chances are of winning.
Happy reading and learning!

5 good books about dealing with monsters

Monster Mess (by Margery Cuyler) is a funny rhyming book about a monster who doesn’t want to scare you. He wants to clean up your messes. It is not scary at all so perfect for kids who have monster fears.
Go Away, Big Green Monster! (by Ed Emberley) is a clever story that tells about the building up and going away of a monster. It is a great story for opening up the conversation about monsters as well as a great lead into crafty activities.

Monsters Don’t Eat Broccoli (by Barbara Jean Hicks) is a super cute book about what monsters will and won’t eat. It is not scary and a great read to tie in with healthy eating habits. It is funny too.

Leonardo, the Terrible Monster (by Mo Willems Leonardo) is a terrible monster. While he tries to scare kiddos, he is quite funny and silly. This story teaches the value of friendship.

Where the Wild Things Are (by Maurice Sendak) is the story of Max and his shenanigans. He gets sent to his room without dinner and through his imagination transports himself to the land where the wild things are and there are no rules. His heart brings him back home in the end.
